Recovering from a Lightning Strike: A Race Against Time
The Emergency Call
It started with a cold call and a crisis. A client reached out in a panic: their building had been struck by lightning, and their entire operation had gone dark. When I arrived on-site, I found a perfect storm of technical challenges. Because the network equipment lacked UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) or surge protection, the lightning strike had surged through the lines, frying the entire network stack.
The situation was complicated by the client’s infrastructure. They were running a variety of legacy systems. Ranging from Windows 98 and XP to Windows 7 and 10, all communicating to a central Windows XP based "server".
The surge hadn't just killed the switch; it had traveled through the Ethernet cables and blown out the network controllers on nearly every hardwired desktop and appliance in the office. The ISP provided modem, the switch, and the desktop NICs were all inoperable.

The Solution
I visited with the client on a Thursday afternoon right after the call came in. With the client needing to be back online by Monday, I moved into high gear:
- Infrastructure Overhaul: We immediately began sourcing and installing a new networking stack to replace the fried hardware.
- Vendor Coordination: We coordinated with the ISP to get a technician on-site quickly to replace the damaged modem and equipment.
- Digital Archaeology: The biggest hurdle was the legacy machines. Since modern hardware doesn't support Windows 98 or XP, I had to hunt down specific legacy Ethernet adapters that were compatible with these older operating systems to bring them back to life.
- Security Hardening: Recognizing the immense security risks associated with running outdated operating systems, I configured these machines to operate on an internal-only network, shielding them from the open internet while maintaining their functionality.
The Win
In almost exactly 48 hours, by the end of Saturday, the impossible was achieved. Every system, from the 25-year-old legacy machines to the modern desktops was back online and communicating. The client was able to resume operations on Monday morning as if the strike had never happened!
The Key Takeaway
This project served as a stark reminder: Surge protection and UPS systems are not optional. A small investment in power protection can be the difference between a five-minute flicker and a total network collapse.
